Yes, this flight is welcome relief to Air Travelers from Kanpur as they had to go to Lucknow (2+ hours by road). The Civil Aviation Minister has said that this flight will not be discontinued as he is confident of success of this flight. It is going with 70% occupancy from both ways from very first day although the minimum fare is INR 2500.00. AI is using a brand new 48 seater ATR on this route.
The salient features are a fully renovated and airconditioned Kanpur airport terminal, Newly carpeted runway with night landing facilities with ILS and DVOR (planes can land in night and fog as well). The security is now managed by CISF.The flight departs Delhi at avery convenient timing 6:30am and returns from Kanpur at 8:50am to reach Delhi at 10:15am (Mon-Sat). It has very good connectivity with various flights going to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Gulf country.I also heard that AI is providing free drop and pickup from Hotel Landmark for this flight.
Earlier Low cost Air Deccan started its flight, but could not manage it due to irregular service, unusual delays and poor timings. So, First the passengers and then AAI had to say good bye to Air Deccan last year.

This is good news for HBTI also as more companies can come to Kanpur easily for campus interview. More details can also be found at wikipedia link of City Kanpur. |

| The problem with these small distance flights is that Airlines treat them with lesat priority.......and often cancel the flight just hours before the departure.....when they dont find a minimum quorum of passengers.....Sounds logical from their economics, but the situation is pathetic for the affected passengers..........I have faced this issue once on Lucknow-Delhi flight..... |

True. I had a bad experince taking flight from Lucknow Airport. Twice in 2004, the flight got delayed by 2-3 hours for reasons unknown (some one told that some ministers and MLAs had to board the flight and they had got stuck in traffic jam). Both times the 164 seater A320 of AI there were only 20-30 passengers only. Any private airlines would have canceled their flight due to lack of passengers.
Thats why welcome Delhi-Kanpur AI flight, they are more reliable than private airlines. They also fly from a seperate terminal 1A in Delhi, not from chaotic 1B. I heard that AI is going to change the timings in April. It would leave Delhi at 10:30am to give connection to morning flights coming from major cities. |
